Three Types of Fishing. Three Different Fish. Pick One and Commit.
Key West fishing breaks into three distinct modes: offshore deep-sea, backcountry flats, and bridge/pier fishing for the casual angler. Most visitors try to do all three in two days and end up doing none of them well.
Offshore charters run 20–30 miles out to the Gulfstream for mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna, and sailfish depending on season. Full day minimum, $800–$1,400 for a private charter. May through September for mahi; January through March for wahoo and tuna.
Backcountry flats fishing is the Keys' signature experience — sight-fishing for permit, bonefish, and tarpon in water so shallow you can read the bottom. Two anglers maximum, all day, all skill levels welcome.
Tarpon fishing runs February through June — it's the single best reason to come in spring. The fight is 20–45 minutes on a fish that jumps. Most anglers who've done this once call it the best fishing day of their lives.
