Jet Skis Are Fun. Jet Ski Accidents Are Not. Here's the Distinction.

Jet skiing is one of the most popular activities in Key West, and also one of the most regulated. If you follow two rules, it's completely safe and genuinely thrilling.

Rule 1 โ€” Watch the no-wake zones: The entire harbor, all marked channel approaches, and any area within 300 feet of a downed skier is a no-wake zone. Key West harbor is heavily patrolled.

Rule 2 โ€” Don't ride drunk: Operating under the influence is a federal offense on the water. The sheriff's deputy boats patrol on weekends.

Rentals: SeaShell Charters and Key West Jet Ski near the Historic Seaport offer 1-hour and half-day rentals. Rates run $120โ€“$180 per hour for a single jet ski. Most operators require a credit card hold, valid driver's license, and a brief on-water orientation.

The best route: head south from the harbor past the no-wake zone, then east along the mangroves toward Stock Island. Budget 2 hours minimum.
