The Reef Goes 125 Miles. You Only Have a Few Dives. Here's What to Pick.
The Florida Keys reef system is the third-largest barrier reef in the world. It's also extremely accessible. But "accessible" doesn't mean "obvious." Most visitors pick a random dive shop and end up on a site that's fine when they could have been on a site that's extraordinary.
For first-time divers: John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo is the canonical first-timer dive. The coral head known as "The Lighthouse" consistently shows eagle rays, grouper, and the occasional shark at depth. It's reliable and safe.
For intermediate divers: The Winch Bricks off Islamorada and Ten-Fathom Ledge near Key West offer better topography โ drop-offs, ledges, and a higher density of marine life. Both require PADI or equivalent certification.
For advanced divers: The Duane and Bibb wrecks off Islamorada are deep water dives requiring advanced certification. These are bucket-list dives.
