You Have 6–8 Hours in Key West. Here's How to Use Them, Not Waste Them.

Most cruise day-trippers stay on Duval Street and feel vaguely disappointed, or pay $80 for a ship's shore excursion that puts them in a golf cart with 12 other people following a guide to a sunset photo stop. There's a better version of Key West.

The first two hours: Walk to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. It's 0.7 miles from the cruise terminal. Go early — before 9am, the park is nearly empty, and the beach on the west side is the best swimming beach in Key West.

The middle hours: Rent a golf cart — about $50–$80 for 4 hours. A golf cart lets you cover the parts of Old Town that a walking tour won't reach: the Bahama Village neighborhood, the Southernmost Point monument, the Historic Seaport.

The last hour: Sunset from the Historic Seaport, not Mallory Square. Less crowded, better waterfront seating, and close to your cruise terminal. Book a sunset sail if you have the budget.
