The Keys With Kids Is a Different Trip. Plan It Like One.
The Florida Keys with kids is not the Florida Keys without kids. The pace is different, the activity selection is different, and the difference between a trip that works and one that doesn't is about 20 minutes of planning.
The beach question: Most of the beaches near Key West are rocky or crowded. The exceptions โ Fort Zachary Taylor and Sombrero Beach (Marathon) โ have actual sand and gradual water entry, which matters for kids under 8. Anne's Beach in Islamorada has a boardwalk, shallow tidal flats for wading, and a hammock between two palms.
Snorkeling with kids: Robbie's Island Adventure (Islamorada) is our recommendation for first-time snorkelers. They read the room โ if a kid is nervous about the mask, they slow down. After the boat: Robbie's Marina tarpon dock. A bucket of herring, a dock full of prehistoric fish, kids losing their minds.
Kayaking: John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo runs canoe and kayak trails through the mangrove lagoons โ calm water, excellent for kids who can handle a paddle.
